Emerald Urethane

Refinishing cabinets is a very important project for homeowners.  When homeowners think about painting their cabinets, they chose painting over refacing and replacing.  Durability is a major concern for most clients that are looking for an alternate solution to replacing their cabinets.  Some of the concerns would be paint failure and durability.

After using a few different paints, I have used emerald urethane.  Emerald urethane is a great product for homeowners that don’t expect to use their cabinets for weeks.  The typical client that i would recommend emerald to would be the homeowner that has just bought a home and won’t be moving in until some form of renovation has been completed.  Although Emerald Paint is a durable paint that once it cures will hold up for years, the paint will stick when two doors touch before the 21 day cure time.  Homeowner that occupy homes that have been freshly painted using emerald urethane would not want to use their cabinets heavily for at least 7 days.

One thing I noticed about Emerald, it’s pretty tough at first touch, but it still has a soft shell until it cures out.  The freshly used cabinets can be used, but the recommendation is not to clean the cabinets for 21 days.  You can wipe off sauces and debris with a damp rag, but real washbility isn’t recommended for 21 days.  Leaving sauces and oils on the painted surface before the recommended 21 days can cause some staining.

Oil Primer is Recommended for Refinishing Projects

Emerald urethane acrylic modified alkyd paint enamel claims that it blocks stains.  However, on multiple occassions oil stains showed up days after the cabinets have been painted.  The only solution was to repaint the cabinets since the paint wasn’t able to block stains, tannin would be a problem.  So it is better to use an oil stain blocking primer over a waterbased stain blocking primer.  Even priming, it would be a good idea to make should you follow the instructions for both products to ensure proper paint adhesion and color retention.

Durable Paint Finish

After the 21 day waiting perfiod, emerald urethane has a nice beautiful finish that gets really hard.  The finish texture is very beautiful and with proper applications, the feel will be so smooth.  Emerald would be one of my choices for cabinet paint options from Sherwin Williams.  After the 21 days have passed you can use your cabinets. Peeling and chipping isn’t something you need to worry about.  I recommend emerald urethane for homeowners that aren’t in a rush to use their cabinets.
